Pregnancy Scanning: Management Tips

Pregnancy Scanning: Management Tips

This blog post was adapted from the OMAFRA Factsheet “Pregnancy Scanning: Management Tips” (AGDEX 433/22) by A. O’Brien. Introduction Pregnancy scanning, using real-time ultrasound equipment, is a useful management tool for Ontario sheep and goat producers. When scanning is performed within the recommended time frame by trained professionals, accuracy of identifying animals that are not pregnant and counting the number of fetuses is high. Pregnancy scanning can be used to assign open ewes to new breeding groups, make culling decisions, and optimize feeding management based on expected litter size. Benefits of Ultrasound Scanning Identify and manage open (not pregnant) ewes or does. Count fetuses to improve feeding management. Improve newborn survival through appropriate feeding management. Determine appropriate dry-off time in…

OMAFRA’s Sheep Management Journal

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has a new sheep management journal. Designed after the popular lambing diary, it is pocket sized and spiral bound. The book is designed to collect information generated on the farm throughout the sheep management cycle. Producers can collect information about things like: on sheep and feed inventories, ram in and out dates, total numbers of lambs weaned and marketed, numbers of animals and days on pasture and health treatments. The book is divided into four main sections: animal management, health management, stored feed management and pasture management. This book provides a low tech method of recording much of the basic information needed to do a basic evaluation of sheep farm…

Packing and Covering Bunker Silos

This article was originally posted on Field Crop News. Written by Joel Bagg. Bunker silos offer many advantages over tower silos for the storage of haylage and corn silage, but require careful management to minimize fermentation and spoilage losses. Along with proper harvest moisture, length-of-cut and the use of a research proven silage inoculant, additional attention must be applied to proper site selection, sizing, filling, packing, covering, rodent control and feed-out of horizontal silos. The invisible dry matter and quality losses as a result of poor packing and covering, in addition to the more visible spoilage losses are much more significant than we realize. With high production costs and forage values, these losses are expensive! Fill Rapidly Filling silos as rapidly as…
